Lola Maverick Lloyd House

Winnetka, Illinois

The Lola Maverick Lloyd House was built in 1920. It is a Winnetka Village Landmark and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The house was built for pacifist and feminist activist Lola Maverick Lloyd and her four children. At the time, Lloyd had recently undergone a public divorce from William Bross Lloyd. Her custody agreement prevented her from returning to her native Texas, so she worked with the Swedish sculptor Charles Haag to design a new house in Winnetka, across town from her ex-husband.

The Arts and Crafts architecture combines elements of Maverick Lloyd’s family ranch in Texas and Haag’s native Sweden. Artistic elements include carved light fixtures, trim, bookcases, and a full-wall Texas ranch mural by WPA artist Dorothy Loeb.
